Motherhood can be so isolating at times. Some women spend their entire day taking care of small children with little to no interaction with other adult human beings. I remember that being my struggle.
I loved my babies and I loved being a stay at home mama, but some days I craved someone to have a cup of coffee and talk to, someone to commiserate with. Being with the little people in my home wasn’t enough. At the end of his busy workday, my husband — bless his heart — was not enough either. He didn’t care to talk about the consistency of a newborn’s poop diaper (It was the perfect shade of mustard yellow today!).
I needed other moms. I wanted to hear a person say I was ok. That I was doing it right. That they were going through the same motherhood journey and didn’t have all the answers either.
That’s why I turned to message boards and mommy blogs. They were a life-line. Natural childbirth, breastfeeding, co-sleeping, homebirth, waterbirth, homemade baby food, vaccines, homeschooling, unschooling, step-parenting, potty training, daycare, etc. — I wanted to talk to other moms about these things that were suddenly so huge in my life. What is it about motherhood that makes women so insatiably hungry for knowledge about their new role in life?
Mommy blogs have been standing strong for over ten years. But now, there is something else out there for moms: podcasts.
Podcasts have increased in popularity over the years and one look at the Kids & Family section on iTunes and you’ll know it’s true. It’s also a very appealing medium for millennial moms who don’t really want to sit down and search through blog posts or watch videos on YouTube. They can listen to podcasts in the car, at the gym, at their desk at work and at home while they’re breastfeeding. I think it’s great that women have another resource at their fingertips.
I was recently invited to join theOaxaca-born, L.A-based sisters Bricia and Paulina Lopez for their popular Super Mamás podcast. Super Mamás provides a judgment-free space where new, experienced and expecting mothers can come together to not only exchange knowledge but more importantly, provide support for one another during the emotional ups and downs of motherhood.
When they invited me to join them for one of their weekly broadcasts, I was so excited! I’ve been really interested in podcasts for a while now, and I was happy to discover just how fun, casual and informative they really are. On this episode, we talk about life with six kids, homebirth and homeschooling. I had such a great time. If you are a faithful podcast listener, please check it out and subscribe to Super Mamás!
