We often see beautiful photos of little girls and boys dressed up as Disney characters on social media. But we don’t often see images of kids dressed as zombies. It caught many by surprise when photographer Alana Hubbard recreated scenes from AMC’s hit show, The Walking Dead, with kids dressed up as the characters.
Hubbard recently spoke with news reporter Vanessa Freeman of News 12 New Jersey about the photos that have since gone viral.
“It’s a creative project I wanted to do for myself. I really didn’t think it would get this big. I thought maybe it would get like a couple hundred likes. I didn’t think it would be this world wide sensation,” she said.
The New Jersey mom used 24 kids between the ages of three and seven, including two of her own children to reenact violent and gruesome scenes from the popular show. It has some people appreciating her vision, while others have spoken out against it saying that the photos are in poor taste.
Tara Marie wrote, 100% creative! Those children are merely modeling for the photos. They don’t understand the context behind the shot because they hopefully don’t watch TWD. To children, it’s just playing a zombie game.
I am a Walking Dead fan and a parent. IMO if you can’t let your kids watch it, they shouldn’t reenact it. It’s one thing to have the kids dress up like the main characters. But the guns, blood and gore was crossing the line, said Lisha Graciela.
Despite the backlash, Hubbard said she stands by her artistic vision.
“The show that I’m reenacting has got a million children actors on it that are babies. Acting is acting. Real is real – like they know not to hurt each other. They know not to punch each other. They know not to stab each other. They know not to shoot each other. But when we’re playing with toys from Toy’s R Us, we have fun,” she said.
Regardless where you stand on the topic of whether or not this reenactment is appropriate for children, we can all probably agree that there is an audience for it.
Hubbard also captions her images with a disclaimer that kids were not harmed during the photo shoot, and that all the zombie injuries were edited in photoshop.
With gun violence being a hot button issue these days, I can certainly understand why some people may not agree with Hubbard’s approach. But at the same, there’s not as much backlash regarding gun violence depicted in many of the movies and shows we watch everyday.
