While most human bodies are made up of the same parts (two legs, five fingers on each hand, etc.), there are some out there who have a more unique setup. That’s how one woman was able to carry both twins and a singleton at the very same time.
You see, a woman living in England named Hannah Kersey was born with uterus didelphys. Rather than having just one womb, she has two.
Despite having been told it was highly unlikely she’d become pregnant in both wombs, in 2006 Hannah got the shocking news she was having triplet girls.
Initially, the babies were conceived from two different eggs, one in each womb, that were fertilized simultaneously by two different sperm. But then one of the eggs divided, leading to identical twins.
Hannah and her husband Mick chose the names Ruby and Tilly for the twins, while the girl who got her very own womb is Gracie. At birth Ruby weighed 2 pounds and 6 ounces, Tilly just 2 pounds even, and Gracie 2 pounds and 13 ounces.
“We were just so thankful that they were healthy and well,” Hannah told Barcroft Media. “It was more than we could have hoped for.”
Although other women with uterus didelphys have simultaneously welcomed two babies from separate wombs before, this particularly family’s experience is believed to be the first case of triplets arriving.
Isn’t that incredible? Though these girls arrived a decade ago I’d never heard of such a thing until today, and had to share with you all. Sometimes all the things a human body can do just blows my mind.
