This breastfeeding in public story has a surprising ending

New Zealand mom Briar Lusia Mcqueen was having breakfast at a local restaurant when her 8-week-old son Jaxon began to cry. She started to breastfeed her hungry boy, but it wasn’t long before she saw a stranger making a beeline for their table.

Briar admits her initial worry was that this older woman was going to scold her for nursing in public without a cover – and really, who can blame her for thinking that? Too many times that’s how these stories seems to end, with breastfeeding moms being outright criticized or gently ushered toward bathroom stalls. This time was very different, though.

The shocked mom took to Facebook to share what happened next, along with a couple of photos:

I love this. Judging by the thousands of comments on Briar’s post so far, I’m not the only one.

I’m always happy to hear stories of breastfeeding moms being supported, but what moved me most about this anonymous lady’s gesture is the simple fact that it’s rooted in such kindness.

How often are we so distracted, so immersed in the details of our lives, that we don’t even recognize when someone else might need a helping hand? And even when we do notice, how often are we too busy or too uncertain to offer it?

This story is such a sweet reminder of a very old quote I love: No act of kindness, however small, is ever wasted.
